FAST5 Ferns net second win at FAST5 Netball World Series

The FAST5 Ferns remain unbeaten after dispatching Uganda by 13 goals to set up a key trans-Tasman clash on the opening day of the FAST5 Netball World Series.

They beat Uganda 40-27 to make it two from two and will now take on the Australian Fast5 team to round out the action at Wolfbrook Arena on day one.

Containing Ugandan shooter Mary Cholhok was always going to be a tough ask for the Ferns and the 2.01m goal scorer kept her team in the game.

It took a four-point power play shot from Martina Salmon to see the Ferns edge ahead 10-8 in the first quarter – her three two-point shots early in the second spell seeing the team race out to a 24-13 advantage at halftime.

The tall timber of Catherine Hall and Erena Mikaere combined well, keeping Cholhok quiet through the middle stages of the game – the shooter eventually moving to the other end of the court in the goal keeper role.

Mikaere came through for a clean intercept late in the third spell as the Ferns finished strongly in what had again been another tricky period to navigate – Maia Wilson finishing off for a 37-21 lead with one quarter to play.

Paris Lokotui said it was good to get a second win adding to the  20-goal win over Jamaica earlier on day one.

The defender caught the attention of the big crowd at Wolfbrook Arena with a couple of cameos in the shooting circle.

“You joke about saying that you want to be a shooter, and it’s come to reality so just trying to take the opportunities and just making sure that I set up the shooters,” she said.
