The Kia Magic beat New Zealand Conference leaders the SKYCITY Mystics in Auckland by three goals to secure the Conference trophy and a home semi-final despite a two day turnaround.
“I am absolutely stoked and I think that Monday night’s victory was one of bravest wins I’ve ever been associated with and I could not be prouder of them,” she said.
“We had everything in place that we thought we could, so that they could get through the game"
“We had a pact that we weren’t going to talk about the tiredness, we knew we had an opportunity to win the NZ Conference and we were lucky to be here and not sitting at home watching it, so we wanted to make the most of the opportunity.”
Fitzgerald will be drawing on all her finals experience – including winning the inaugural title in 2008 – to guide her young charges to victory on Sunday night against a talent-laden NSW Swifts outfit.
“Having a home semi is obviously an advantage, we didn’t want to travel again and there’s no doubt in the world that we will need to do a lot of recovery this week,” she said.
“We talked only last week that we really have been through quite a bit this year and to be able to reach the stage where we can play Finals at home we are pretty proud of.”
The Kia Magic host the NSW Swifts at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton on Sunday 14 June from 7.10pm in the second ANZ Championship Semi-Final.
Tickets are available through Ticketek with the match featuring live on SKY Sport 1.
