Once the most revered New Zealand domestic side, the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic boasted the biggest names in international netball.
Irene van Dyk, Casey Kopua (Williams), Laura Langman, Maria Folau (Tutaia), and Leana de Bruin were key contributors throughout the years, helping the Magic dominate during a golden era for the team.
The Magic started strong in the inaugural trans-Tasman league in 2008. A roster boasting van Dyk, Williams, Langman, Tutaia, and Joline Henry gave the side a reputation and status even before the first game was played.
The legendary Laura Langman captained the Magic to the Grand Final in the 2012 ANZ Championship, where they became the only New Zealand side to win the title in the league’s nine-year history. The irreplaceable Irene van Dyk sunk 25 goals to gift the Magic a 41-38 win over the Melbourne Vixens, silencing doubters who thought New Zealand sides couldn’t compete with the Australians.
Of course, it’s impossible to talk about the legacy and power of the Magic without mentioning Dame Noeline Taurua. Taking the reins in 2002 for the National Bank Cup,
Taurua led the side for eleven seasons, including the historic ANZ Championship title win. Her leadership cemented the Magic’s legacy, creating a foundation of excellence that continues today.
Fast forward to 2025, and the Magic's legacy is still alive and thriving. National selectors and Silver Ferns coach Dame Noeline Taurua named AVIS Magic players Claire O’Brien, Erena Mikaere, and Ameliaranne Ekenasio as part of 2024 standout Silver Ferns squad. Claire’s selection marks her debut for the Silver Ferns, while Erena’s inclusion is a well-deserved recall. Additionally, Saviour Tui and Georgie Edgecombe have been recognised for their talent, earning spots in the 2024 Silver Ferns Development Squad and Fast5 Ferns team.
With nine wins in the 2024 season, the Magic narrowly missed out on the playoffs by just one point. However, with nine of their ten players returning, they have set themselves up for a stellar 2025 season. With a strong foundation and renewed determination, the Magic are ready to build on their legacy and aim for success in the coming year.
With such incredible talent both past and present, the Magic continues to be a powerhouse of New Zealand netball, representing a proud tradition of excellence on and off the court.
