The Waikato Bay of Plenty AVIS Magic took plenty of positives from their first pre-season match of 2025, stepping onto the court against the Melbourne Vixens in front of a packed Red Energy Stadium in Bendigo. While the Vixens claimed a 65-49 win, Magic made the most of the opportunity to test different combinations, build connections within their game structures and adapt to new game innovations.

Head Coach Mary Jane Araroa was pleased with the learning experience and the way her players embraced the challenge.

“This game was all about growth and testing ourselves with key objectives” said Araroa. “It was great to see the players working hard on our structures and taking on the challenge of the two-point shot. Our shooters gained valuable insights into managing this more effectively, likewise with our defensive unit gaining greater awareness.”

The match also provided a chance to experiment with time-outs and how best to use them - an important aspect ahead of the 2025 ANZ Premiership season.

While the scoreboard didn’t fall in Magic’s favour, took plenty of positives from the game and will use these learnings to sharpen their approach as the season progresses.

Magic return to New Zealand to continue their training ahead of their next pre-season match in Rotorua against Stars on Friday 4 April. Tickets for this match are available here
