Rotorua was buzzing over the weekend as Waikato Bay of Plenty AVIS Magic and the Stars faced off in an exciting pre-season clash, followed by a special community netball day that brought young fans closer to the teams.

A crowd of over 1500 filled the Rotorua Energy Events Centre on Friday night, creating an electric atmosphere for what turned out to be a sensational 57–57 draw. Mayor Tania Tapsell officially welcomed the crowd before taking up a special role alongside her daughter, who proudly delivered the match ball.

Both teams used the opportunity to test different combinations, but the intensity never wavered. AVIS Magic began strong, but Stars rallied and led by nine at one point. A final-quarter timeout gave Magic the chance to reset and make the most of the newly introduced two-point shot, an innovation that sparked huge excitement in the stands and showed just how quickly momentum can shift. Ekenasio’s clutch long-range efforts had the crowd on their feet as Magic surged back to level the score at 57–57.

The match also saw the introduction of tactical timeouts and an extended coaches’ box, giving fans a preview of how these new elements could shape the 2025 season. It was a strong outing from both sides and a sign the 2025 season will be one to watch.

The event was brought to life with activations and competitions at the entrance thanks to Profiles Gym. A massive thanks to Profiles Gym, Rotorua Trust, Rotorua Lakes Council, Red Stag, Montana Catering, Millennium Hotel and Rotorua Netball Centre for making this event possible.

The energy continued into Saturday morning as 110 tamariki and rangatahi, aged from 3 to 16, took part in a free skills clinic with both Magic and Stars. The session included a NetballSmart warm-up, targeted drills, and a high-energy cool down. Participants were split into age groups to ensure a tailored experience.

Ameliaranne Ekenasio led a Q&A session that had kids and parents fully engaged, before both squads stayed on for photos and autographs. Families travelled from as far as Taupō, Tokoroa, and the Eastern Bay of Plenty, making the morning even more special.

A big mihi to everyone who came out, cheered loud, and made our pre-season feel unforgettable. Magic now shift focus to the Ōtaki Tournament next weekend as preparations continue for the 2025 season.
