After a series of scans, assessments and treatment, Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic is able to provide an update on the injuries to WBOP Magic players Kelly Jury and Sydney Fraser.
Kelly jury
On Wednesday 16th May, Kelly dislocated her right shoulder during an ANZ Premiership match against Southern Steel.
Kelly underwent an MRI scan on Friday 18th May, the result of which shows a labreal tear within the shoulder post dislocation. Unfortunately, Kelly is now under orthopaedic review with a shoulder specialist in Waikato, and we will be looking to schedule surgery within the next month to repair the tear.
At this stage, we expect Kelly will miss the rest of the 2018 ANZ Premiership with a successful return to the court in 2019. Her rehabilitation is expected to take between 6-9 months, depending on the success of surgery.
Sydney Fraser
On Monday 19th March, Sydney ruptured her right Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) during a pre-season match against Northern Stars.
Sydney underwent reconstructive surgery on Monday 30th April and is already into her fourth week of rehabilitation, and making good progress.
Sydney’s rehab is tracking according to plan, and at this stage, Sydney will miss the whole of the 2018 ANZ Premiership, and we expect her to make successful return to the court in 2019. Her rehabilitation is expected to take between 9-12 months, and is at present on track for a 9-month recovery.
WBOP Magic Head Coach, Margaret Forsyth, said;
“While all of us in the Magic camp are extremely disappointed about the season ending injuries sustained by both Sydney and Kelly, we have rallied and will step up a team. Our senior players have really supported our more junior players as they’ve responded to their opportunities to play in the prized Black Dress of Magic. We really wish Kell and Syd all the best for their rehabilitation and return to netball for the 2019 ANZ Premiership’”.

Add this to Sydney’s season ending ACL rupture, and we’ve now lost two highly talented and popular Magic players for the 2018 ANZ Premiership. As an organisation, we have and will continue to provide the very best care and support to both players in order to help them reach their goals of returning to competitive netball as soon as they can. Our fantastic supporters will want to wish them both speedy recoveries, but I’m sure they will also rally around Magic for the rest of the season and help the team get through what’s been a tough few months.”
