It was a night to remember for Georgie Edgecombe, who was recognised across the board at the 2025 AVIS Magic Awards Night, receiving Players Player, Members Player, and the prestigious Laura Langman Medal.
Held at SkyCity Hamilton, the evening was a chance to reflect on the 2025 season, celebrate the contributions of players and staff, and recognise standout performances.
Edgecombe, who has continued to cement her place as one of Magic’s most consistent and dynamic players, was honoured by her teammates, fans, and coaching staff for her work ethic, leadership, and presence both in the team environment and across the ANZ Premiership.
"Georgie is the epitome of an athlete," said one teammate. "She goes hard at everything, always performs at games and trainings, and finds a way to lift everyone around her, even when things aren't going our way."
Head Coach Mary-Jane Araroa presented Edgecombe with the Laura Langman Medal, an award that recognises excellence, resilience, and a team-first attitude, hallmarks of the former Silver Ferns captain.
“This award honours a player who embodies the spirit and legacy of Laura Langman,” Araroa said. “Georgie’s commitment to her team, her performance, and her continual growth as an athlete made her a clear choice.”
The Rookie of the Year award went to rising shooter Kate Taylor, whose contributions to the Magic environment have not gone unnoticed in her debut season.
“Despite her youth, Kate has shown remarkable maturity and poise in a high-performance setting,” said Araroa. “Her development on court has been impressive, and her energy and willingness to learn have made a real impact on the team.”
Taylor’s growth has also been recognised nationally, with selection in the New Zealand U21 squad for a second consecutive year and her recent naming as a trialist for the upcoming Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar.
In the National Netball League (NNL), Ariana Cable-Dixon (Ana) was named WBOP Matarau’s standout NNL player, recognised for her leadership, versatility, and impact across the season.
“Ana is a phenomenal leader and selfless team player,” said NNL coach Helena Hoult. “She not only leads by example with her exceptional fitness and Champion Data stats but is constantly looking out for others, offering extra training, sorting transport, and supporting behind the scenes. She’s the glue in our team.”
Cable-Dixon played a key role in shaping the culture and tempo of the Waibop Matarau side and continues to inspire through her on- and off-court contributions.
While results on the scoreboard didn’t always fall Magic’s way in 2025, the evening was a reminder of the pride, perseverance, and people that make this team what it is.
