For the third year running Splice Construction Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic legend Samantha Winders will captain the new look team in the ANZ 2022 Premiership.
The Silver Fern and Rotorua local, Winders says it’s an honour to led the Magic waka into 2022 supported by an experienced leadership group.
“I’m really excited for a new era for Magic and to captain this side is a privilege.”
“I grew up in this region and it’s the team I supported growing up in Rotorua. Having been around for so long you get to know the people involved, behind scenes – the fans that turn up every week for however long ago, that connection to our people is amazing.”
Recognising the incredible leadership capability within the team Winders is quick to point out that she will lean on the leadership group to bring out the best in the team.
Experienced international netballer and new Magic recruit Bailey Mes along with Magic stalwart Erena Mikaere, will support Winders as the leadership group for the season. Former Silver Ferns Captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio will also provide valuable insights to the team as she returns to play following the birth of her daughter Luna in October 2021.
With a new look Magic for 2022, the return of Silver Ferns who were away in England at the Netball Quad Series in January, as well players on return to play schedules after maternity leave, it’s been a full-on start to the year for the team says Winders.
“We’ve been working hard to get our connections going and we’re ready to rock and roll. The beauty of our new Magic players is that all have experience at the next level. You can’t ever compare that sort of experience.”
Winders has played for the Magic since leaving school in 2014 and became a centurion of the club in 2021.
“The Magic love in our region runs deep and we have some very loyal fans. We’re ready to take the court in a new era for Magic.”
